Our Past Projects
These are some of the projects we have done in the past. If you like more information about any of them or want to contribute with your time, talent, or treasure, please do not hesitate to contact us. We are looking forward to hearing from you so that these projects can become a reality again and serve our families and systems. You can also view some of our current projects here.
Vidas Sanas 2020 / Health Lives 2020 You can view some of the projects we have produced under our health initiative by going to the Vidas Sanas 2020 website. We have worked with hospitals, physicians, organizations, and employers to improve the health and wellbeing of the Latino community in South and North Dallas, Rowlett and Collin County. And we continue to produce projects that enhance the health of the community. Forgiveness / Perdón We have successfully implemented this process in the community and over 500 families have benefit from it. Thus we continue to find venues and participants for it and train facilitators into the process. It is an emotional and spiritual healing process through which participants attain a positive change in their emotional experience through the learned art of forgiveness leaving with a new perspective and willingness to change behaviors through aftercare components of continued healing, conversion and self-learning. Program can be delivered as a one-day workshop/retreat or over the course of six weeks. Curriculum is available in English or Spanish for interdenominational or Catholic settings and is offered to adults and youth ages 12-17. It can be combined with other psychoeducational processes such as the Life Project and Strong Youth. Nuestras Voces. Nuestras Familias This past May and June 2010 we developed and awareness and assessment campaign for Spanish-speaking Latino families on behalf of Collin County and the University of North Texas. The Commissioners of Collin County wanted to assess the behavioral and substance abuse needs of its community and the usage of available services. During those months we made an outreach to over 1,200 Collin County residents and gave presentations and seminars to collect data in the survey developed by the University. We prepared a PSA (public service announcement) for television and another for radio that aired in the most popular TV and radio stations on the area. A website, postcards and other materials had information about places to fill out the survey as well as the locations of our partners and outreach workers. We did everything in a shoe-string budget with the collaboration of health providers, community organizations, faith-based organizations and volunteers. Strong Youth from Strong Parents This process is a culturally-adapted social-emotional learning curricula designed for the purpose of teaching social and emotional skills, promoting resilience, strengthening assets, instilling cultural pride and increasing coping skills of Latino children and early adolescents considered at-risk for mental health problems and drop-out rates so they will be successful in mainstream American schools. It is a family-centered program available in Spanish, English or Bilingual with youth being served in age appropriate groups while parents are taught the lessons separately and receive additional parenting education on family and relationships with support in accessing community-based behavioral health and social services. We adapted the existing curriculum to be used in a community or faith-based setting for Latino youth involving the parents. We implemented the adaptations with success during 2009 using a control group without adaptations. Pre-Easter Youth Mission We developed a one-day mission for youth during 2009 in a Dallas-area church that included talks and liturgical celebrations. Hundreds of youth and their families participated in this greatly successful event that was coordinated by volunteers from the church and the community. Grieving your Lost Childhood Retreat Many people suffer because of trauma, neglect, or other unresolved situations that happened during their childhood. Without being able to work past those unresolved feelings, they continue to suffer and are not able to function in fullness within their family and community. That is why we developed and implemented a 3-day retreat with psychoeducational activities, contemplative meditations, and tools adapted for Latinos in the North Texas area. Participants came renewed from the experience and able to let go of the feelings and situations of the past. |
